Compared to the New 2022 iPad Air vs. 2020 iPad Air

The fifth-generation iPad Air launched today with M1 and 5G support. However, it could be difficult for those who already own the fourth-generation model. These are the comparisons.

The company revealed an update to iPad Air at the "Peak Performance" event. This brings it up to the fifth generation. The iPad Air was positioned between the iPad Pro and the iPad. It offered premium styling but at a lower price. Depending on your perspective, it may be enough to allow fourth-gen owners to upgrade to the new model.

iPad Air Gen 5 and iPad Air Gen 4 Physical Dimensions

Apple made significant changes to its overall design when it upgraded from the third-generation iPad Air to the fourth. The iPad's design was changed from the original iPad to a larger, almost edge-to-edge display with no chin. It also featured an iPad Pro-inspired casing.

The fifth-generation iPad Air is a spec-bump version, so there's nothing new on the tablet's exterior. It is the same in appearance down to its physical dimensions.

The fifth-generation and fourth-generation models are 9.74 inches tall, 7.02 inches wide, and 0.24 inches thick. However, there is some variation in the weight.

The fourth-generation Wi-Fi edition weighs precisely 1 pound, while the cellular version is 1.01 pounds. The fifth-gen Wi-Fi and Cellular editions weigh 1.02 pounds each, with a mere gram difference.

Although the newer models are heavier than older models, it is not significant.

iPad Air Gen 5 vs. iPad Air Gen 4 - Display

Both display the 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display. Apple could have upgraded to miniLED backlighting, but it chose to keep using LED backlighting.

Both models have the exact resolution of 2,360 x 1,640. Each model has a pixel density equal to 264ppi. The display has identical brightness at 500 nits and features full lamination, True Tone, Wide color (P3) support, and wide color (P3) support.

iPad Air Gen 5 vs. iPad Air Gen 4 - Processing performance

The SoC that drives the two models is the most crucial difference between the two generations. The fourth generation used the A14 Bionic CPU, two high-performance and four energy-efficient cores. Apple leaped with the fifth generation, using a six-core CPU, an Apple-designed GPU, and a 16 core Neural Engine.

The M1 desktop-class chip is used in the iPad Pro range. It includes an eight-core CPU, split equally with efficiency and performance cores, an 8-core GPU, and a 16-core "next-generation" Neural Engine.

Apple claims that the fifth-generation iPad Air is 60% faster than its predecessor, thanks to the M1 CPU. It also boasts twice the graphics capabilities.

GeekBench is the best place to compare the fifth-generation iPad Pro to the current benchmarks.

This is because the 8GB memory of the iPad Pro models with lower capacities M1 is the same as the fifth-generation iPad Air. The fourth-generation iPad Air has 4GB.

The iPad Pro 11" with the M1 processor has 1,715 single-core and 7,229 multicore scores in Geekbench. This is the 8-core M1 CPU.

The iPad Air 4 with A14 Bionic scored an iPad Air 4 single-core score of 1,512 and a 4,302 multicore score of 4,302. A14 Bionic's 6-core processor explains the lower multicore score.

The A14 can score 12,480 on Geekbench's Metal test. While the M1 can score 21,285, it's graphical.

iPad Air Gen 5 vs. iPad Air Gen 4 - Cameras

The fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air's rear cameras have the same 12-megapixel Wide camera with a 5x digital zoom and Smart HDR 3.

It's the same story for video. Both can record 4K60 footage and 1080p at 240fps Slomo. However, the fifth gen has a more comprehensive dynamic range that allows 30fps video.

The 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera at the front has been replaced by a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide version of the fifth-generation model. It also gets a 2x zoom.

Center Stage support is included in the new camera. This allows you to take advantage of FaceTime's viewing angle and zoom.

The fourth-gen video has 1080p video and cinematic video stabilization. The fifth-gen video extends the dynamic range to 30fps.

iPad Air Gen 5 and iPad Air Gen 4 - Charging and Battery

Sometimes, a change in the processor can lead to slower usage. For other devices such as iPhones, this could be true. This is not the case.

Both models adhere to Apple's tablet standard of 10 hours of web surfing over Wi-Fi or video. Mobile work can take up to 9 hours, but the number drops slightly.

Apple includes a 20W USB C power adapter that charges identical 28.6-inch batteries.

Conclusion

This is a spec bump upgrade, but it works strictly as intended.
