Apple introduced Spatial Audio in 2020 to AirPods Pro. Software magic adjusts audio frequencies to mimic sounds from 3D spaces.

The listener can feel sounds coming from their sides, fronts, backs, or even above. Special sensors embedded in Apple's AirPods allow it to track the movement of your head relative to the device's position, which will enable it to fix or anchor sound to your device.

How do you listen to spatial audio using your Mac?

You can now listen to or play Spatial Audio from your Mac using macOS Monterey. This feature is compatible with any audio device and Mac model that supports it.

Spatial Audio works only with Apple Silicon Macs. This includes the M1 MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Also, ensure that macOS Monterey is installed.

An audio device compatible with Spatial Audio is required to listen to Spatial Audio on your Mac. These items are all required:

  • AirPods Pro
  • AirPods Pro Max
  • AirPods (3rd generation)
  • Beats Fit Pro

Connect your Mac to your listening device, then insert them into your ears.

Open the Control Center by going to the menu bar.

Click Bluetooth to find your listening device in the list.

Turn on Spatial Stereo or Stereo Spatialize Stereo
