32-Bit vs. 64-Bit: What's The Difference?

We have previously discussed the differences between 32-bit Windows and 64-bit Windows, which we will summarize here. Your computer's processor will determine whether you can install 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows.

Processors can be either 32-bit (Windows) or 64-bit (Windows). 64-bit processors can process more information at once, making them more powerful. Although 32-bit processors can still be found in older computers, they are almost entirely outperformed by 64-bit CPUs.

You can only install 32-bit Windows on a 32-bit processor. However, it is possible to install 32-bit Windows on 64-bit processors, but 64-bit Windows must be installed to take advantage of the 64-bit CPU's advantages fully.

Windows 11 can only be installed as a 64-bit edition. Windows 11 is not available for 32-bit processors. Windows 10 through Windows 7 can be installed in either of these flavors.

To check if 64-bit Windows has been installed on Windows 10. Go to Settings > Systems > About. You'll find the Device specifications header next to Type. This will tell you if your Windows and processor are 32-bit, 64-bit, or both.

For older Windows versions, right-click Computer in the Start menu and select Properties. To view the same information, use the Win+ Pause screenshot.

x86 is 32-bit architecture. x64 is 64-bit.

Should I download 32-Bit or64-Bit Windows?

In almost all cases, 64-bit Windows installations have replaced 32-bit versions of Windows. Although 64-bit Windows is generally the best choice, it's worth reviewing what you have currently.

A 64-bit version of Windows will be included in a new computer you purchase off the shelf. You can get a 64-bit version of Windows on a new computer that is 64-bit. A used computer is the only place you will find a 32-bit processor. You should avoid buying any laptop you see in this condition, as it is likely to be obsolete.

It might be different when you upgrade a Windows installation. You can upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 by first checking if your processor supports 64-bit using this method.

If this is the case, you will need to upgrade to 64-bit Windows. This will give you the best performance, preventing you from having to do another upgrade later.

If you upgrade from Windows 10 to a 32-bit processor, you can still install the 32-bit edition. As you can't upgrade your existing machine to Windows 11, we recommend that you save for a new computer.

How to Install the Right Version of Windows

Although you may be able to find Windows in physical stores such as Walmart or Best Buy, it is best to download Windows from Microsoft.

Select the version you wish to download and click on the Download link under the Create Windows installation Media section. To grab the Media Creation Tool. This will guide you through the process of upgrading your computer or creating a USB drive that can be used to install Windows onto another machine.

After completing the steps, the tool will prompt you to select the Architecture. This is where you can choose 64-bit or 32 bit. Windows will suggest an option based upon what it has detected from your computer. If you want to modify the choice based on earlier information, uncheck the box.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 if you have a genuine copy. The new version will be activated using your current product key.

When you get the product key, you don't need to worry about whether you are buying a new 64-bit license or a 32-bit license when you get the product key. A license allows you to activate Windows and use it; it is not tied to any architecture type.

What are the Advantages of 64 Bit Windows?

You now know whether you need 64-bit or 32-bit Windows. What does 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 do for you?

64-bit Windows can handle more RAM than 32-bit Windows. 32-bit operating systems restrict you to 4GB RAM or less. Any RAM you have installed more than 4GB will not work on 32-bit Windows. 64-bit systems can use HTML3_ more RAM than they'll need (roughly 17 million TB).

You'll notice two Program files folders on a 64-bit Windows operating system. Windows separates 32-bit and 64-bit programs because they are different.

The Software designed for x64 systems will be installed in the program files folder. 32-bit software is moved to Programm Files (x86). You will only see one program files folder on a 32-bit computer. It cannot use 64-bit Software.

64-bit Windows is inherently safer. Low-level tweaks are what provide most of the enhancements. 64-bit Windows, for example, requires drivers to be signed. These changes won't render the OS immune from attack, but they will make it a modern architecture not hampered by outdated exploits.

Do 64-Bit Windows Systems Work?

64-bit Windows is the current standard for most users. It would help if you used it to benefit from security features, improved performance, and greater RAM capacity. There are very few reasons to stay with 32-bit Windows.

  • Your computer is equipped with a 32-bit processor. To install 64-bit Windows on a new machine, you will need to replace your current computer. To take advantage of the latest hardware, we recommend that you upgrade soon.
  • Old Software and devices are used. Older devices could only support 32-bit Windows because 32-bit Windows was so widely used over the years. Your printer may not work with 64-bit Windows if it is older than 20 years.
  • You probably don't use Software from decades past every day, but you shouldn't upgrade to 64-bit Windows if you do. Consider updating these tools to modernize your system.
