The foundation of macOS (first known as Mac OS X, then OS X) was the NeXTSTEP platform that Steve Jobs brought from NeXT after his return to the company he founded with his co-founders. 1. Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah)
The app was released on March 24, 2001, for $129; Cheetah was widely criticized as an insufficient solution, with only a few apps available through third-party app developers.
Despite that Cheetah launch, many Mac owners decided to stay with Mac OS 9, which is the latest version of the traditional Mac operating system.

The initial nine versions of macOS were named after cats. They began with Cheetah at the time of 2001. Since 2013, when OS Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks, all-new macOS versions are named after specific locations in California.
The highlights feature: The first version of macOS was the one that featured the well-known Mac dock and Terminal tools. Before that, Mac OS was one of the very few operating systems that didn't include an interface for the command line.
2. Mac OS X 10.1 (Puma)
In just six months, after having launched Cheetah, Apple announced the second version of macOS. The codename was Puma OS X 10.1 included performance improvements and upgraded AppleScript and DVD playback support and much more.
The price was $129. Puma was, however, free for Cheetah owners. On January 1, 2002, Apple declared that it would be the end of all things: Mac OS X was the standard operating software on all Mac products and replacing Mac OS 9.
3. Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar)
The announcement came eleven months following Puma, Mac OS X Jaguar (a $129 upgrade) in August 2002. 3.0 of macOS was the first version to utilize the code name in its advertisements. The upgrade offered MPEG-3 support for QuickTime and included an address book. Search functions were also added to Mac Finder.
Mac OS X Jaguar was the first operating system from Apple in the last 18 years to not have it as a Happy Mac at startup.
4. Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
The year 2003 was the time Apple released the Mac OS 10.3 Panther. With better performance and numerous user interface improvements, Panther came with a plethora of new features. They included faster-user switching Expose FileVault, Font Book, Safari, iChat, enhanced PDF rendering, and many more.

Similar to previous versions, Panther was priced at $129 for one license.
5. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Apple did not release the latest version of Mac OS X again until Tiger was released on April 29 of 2005. With more than 200 brand new features, the Mac OS 10.4 update significantly improved over the previous version. 10.4 update included Spotlight, Dashboard, and Smart Folders for the first time. The update also brought significant improvements on QuickTime, Safari, Automator, and more.
Tiger was the first Mac OS X version offered to the brand-new Intel-based Macs. The version, however, did not include Classic Mac for the first time.
Cupertino was once more charged $129 for the upgrade.
6. Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
It cost $129 for Apple Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and was unveiled just 17 months following Tiger. The release was described as "the biggest update of Mac OS X" up to now; Leopard introduced 300 new features that are available for PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

New features were added, including Time Machine, Spaces, and Boot Camp pre-installed. Mail and iChat have also seen significant improvements.
Leopard is the first macOS version not to include or support Classic Mac and the last to support PowerPCs.
7. Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
First, the macOS version that focused on "under the hood" changes, Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, launched in 2009. It came with faster Time Machine backups and a more fluid Finder.
The first time, Apple decreased the cost of the macOS version. Snow Leopard was $29 for one license.
8. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)
It was in July 2011 that Apple introduced Mac OS 10.7 Lion. 10.7 Lion. It added more use of multi-touch gestures and also introduced LaunchPad. It's a New Mission Control unified Expose, Spaces, and Dashboard.
It was $30! Lion update is an official "Mac" OS X version.
9. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion was launched at the end of July. From that point, Apple would release a new version of macOS each year instead of an annual cycle of two years. The upgrade brought many of the features introduced to the iPhone using iOS 5, including Game Center, iMessage, and Reminders.

Mountain Lion was the first macOS version released through the Mac App Store and the last version to require a fee ($20). Mountain Lion was also the final version with a cat's name.
10. OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Mavericks introduced Maps and the iBooks (now Books) to Mac for the first time.
The update also brought enhancements to the Notification Center.
11. OS X 10.10 Yosemite
The update was released in October 2014. OS X 10.10 Yosemite was released. The upgrade featured a more minimalist, flat style based on text.
The update substituted iPhoto as well as Aperture with Photos. Photos app and Handoff were launched.
12. OS X 10.11 El Capitan
It was released in September of 2015, OS X 10.11 El Capitan was the last version of OS X. It was essentially a boost to the system's performance, but there were no changes from the outside.
El Capitan arrived with Metal API, resulting in better graphics performance and upgrades to the Notes application. The first macOS version offered editing options within the Photos application.
13. macOS 10.12 Sierra
The first officially released macOS version, macOS 10.12 Sierra, was released in September of 2016. It brought the launch of Siri in the Mac in the first instance and provided optimized storage and improvements to the Photos and Messages and the iTunes application.

14. macOS 10.13 High Sierra
The release of macOS 10.13 High Sierra in September 2017 macOS 10.13 High Sierra brought improvements to both the Photos and Safari applications.
However, most of the changes were made under the hood, such as technological updates and performance enhancements.
15. macOS 10.14 Mojave
Apple's macOS 10.14 Mojave (2017) has been a massive success with applications that were previously only available to iOS, such as Apple News, Voice Memos, and Home. Furthermore, Mojave was the first macOS version with a more extensive dark mode.
It also brought about the elimination of the integration of Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, and Flickr. Mojave is also believed to be the last macOS version that supports 32-bit apps.
16. macOS 10.15 Catalina
The precursor to macOS Big Sur, macOS 10.15 Catalina, was officially released in October 2019. It was the first update to add Activation Lock and the final macOS 10—x version to be released.

Catalina is known as one of the first Mac updates to make Catalyst available to allow developers to write applications run on both macOS and iPad. Sidecar was also a new feature and let the Mac utilize an iPad as an external wireless display.

17. macOS 11. Big Sur
The most recent macOS version introduced the dawn of a new age for Mac when it launched in November of 2020. With a new user interface with new icons, Big Sur brings perhaps the most significant changes to Mac in the last generation.
